A unique project has been initiated, first of its kind in the region to promote book reading in new gen students, in the 103 years old Govt. College at Ludhiana started in 1920 and later SCD prefixed it’s name as an honor to its Alumnus (1934) An Aerospace Engineer, Satish Chander Dhawan (1934 student).
The college Alumni have started collecting Alumni authored books since its inception till date. College Principal Prof.Dr Tanveer Likhari consented to earmark a separate space and new book shelves provided for the purpose for which the college librarian Bharpoor Singh and Brij Bhushan Goya, Organizing secretary of Alumni Association who initially mooted the project are coordinating.
Already, more than 150 alumni authored on various domains like poetry, essays, ethics, philosophy and motivational books in all languages have poured in and more alumni are couriering their books to the college from all over the world where they have settled after studies from the college as the word for the project spread. College has already placed books authored by Alumni like Padam Shri Sahir Ludhianvi , Padms Shri Keki N.Daruwala IPS Retd(Sahitya Academy Awardee), Paramjit Sahai IFS Retd. M S Gill IAS Retd,a former Central minister, Chief Election Commissioner and Padam Bhivushna Awardee, Dr J S Anand (Poet-Serbian Awardee), Joginder Singh,IPS (A former CBI Chief), Prof.Sarita Tiwari, Prof Ashok Kapor, Swarnjit Savi, Gurbhajan Gill, Brij B.Goyal, Princpal Manjit Sandhu, Surjit Bhagat, Mandeep Singh, books of Alumni members at SGGSC and of many others . Alumni books are pouring regularly in the college.
The project got a big boost when Swarnjit Savi, An alumnus who is an acclaimed poet, painter/sculptor and a publisher himself turned up to gift his 10 self-authored choicest books including 2 written on him in the college principal’s office. While interacting Savi who did MA English (1981) told that his grooming has been from this very college. Savi has been honored for his literary as well as artistic pursuits in Punjab by Sahit Academy and also he got Best Poet Award-2015 at World Punjabi Conference in Canada besides got many honors in India for his artistic pursuits and poetry. Principal Dr Likhari thanked Savi and other living Alumni who are sending self-authored books. She also appreciated local Layal Books, Director Tarun Bhateja (An Alumnus) who made available complimentary 22 of motivational books of Late Joginder Singh IPS(CBI) who hd studied for 6 years till late 1950s. Goyal, Alumni coordinator who regularly visits his Alma Mater told that new generation readers in the college library can be seen very keen on laying hands on the alumni authored books, particularly of poetry and motivational books.
Bharpoor Singh, a visionary librarian said that pictures of Alumni Authors with their bio will be put in the library reading room. Goyal informed that books of Alumni Jaswant Jafar (Poet),Jang Bahadur Goyal (Sahit Sanjeevni fame), Mohan Gill and Bal Ananad IFS Retd. and many other acclaimed teachers & students are being solicited from alumni as the association comes to know about their books for this unique project.
